REMINDERS AND FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR POULTRY/EXOTIC SALES

Do I have to register for every Poultry/Exotic Sale?
No. Your registration is on an annual renewal basis good for 1 year from date of application or date renewal is received in the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s office. There is no fee. Click here for an application. (Example: A registration applied for in August 1, 2015 is good until August 1, 2016.)

Will I be notified when my registration expires?
No, it is your responsibility to renew upon the deadline.

Can I sell livestock at my Poultry/Exotic Sale?
No. In order to sell any hoofed livestock, you must obtain and have a USDA Federal Market Agreement.

Can I sell dogs and cats at my Poultry/Exotic Sale?
No – not with this registration. Dogs and cats can only be sold if you obtain a USDA Animal Care license and State of Iowa Animal Welfare license.

Do I need to have a Veterinarian?
Yes. The auction Veterinarian you have chosen must be licensed and accredited in the state of Iowa.

What are the duties of my auction Veterinarian?
a. Your Veterinarian must inspect all animals and poultry and complete a statement verifying the health prior to the start of the sale. All poultry/animals showing signs of any contagious disease shall be removed from the premises immediately. b. The veterinarian must sign and date a statement to that effect that is to be kept with your sale records. c. The veterinarian must also be available to complete a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection for any interstate shipment of animals or poultry.

What needs to be S. Pullorum-Typhoid tested?
a. 100% of all (Poultry) domestic fowl as egg-type chickens, meat-type chickens, turkeys, domestic waterfowl, domestic game birds, pheasants and exhibition poultry must be tested. Ostriches, rheas, cassowaries and emus are also required to be tested. S. Pullorum-Typhoid testing is not required for finches, budgerigars (parakeets, cockatiels, parrots, etc.), doves and pigeons. b. Birds do not have to be tested that come from a (NPIP) Certified S. Pullorum-Typhoid free flock or have had a negative test within the prior 90 days under the current owner. Proof of the flock certification or a copy of the negative test (VS form 9-2) done by a certified tester must be provided.

Can I have anyone do the S. Pullorum-Typhoid testing?
No. All testers must be certified Pullorum testers and a copy of their current certification card should be held in the sale records.

What is the minimum age that all poultry can be tested for S. Pullorum-Typhoid?
All poultry must be at least 30 days of age before a pullorum test can be performed. Keep in mind, only tested poultry can be sold/exhibited.

Can I sell baby chicks or hatching eggs from a Non-certified flock?
No. Chicks and eggs must originate from a S. Pullorum-Typhoid Certified Free flock and be accompanied by a copy of their NPIP status certificate.

Do birds purchased at one poultry sale and sold at another need to be re-tested?
Yes. Once negative birds change ownership they lose their negative free status even if they originate from a Certified free flock or hatchery or have been tested negative in the last 90 days.

What paperwork is necessary for an intrastate shipment or sale.
All animals can ship intrastate on a bill of sale as long as species, breed, age, sex information is recorded and can be traced to the new owner.

Can poultry be shipped out of Iowa on a VS 9-3 form instead of a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI)?
No. Birds can only be shipped on the VS form 9-3 if they travel from a NPIP member certified free flock. All other poultry and birds can only move on a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection.

Will my records ever be reviewed?
Yes. Records must be complete to allow review by personnel of the Iowa Department of Agriculture. Your sales records must be retained for 3 years.
